Have you ever heard the phrase, “It is not what you know, but who you know?” This statement is very true, especially when it comes down to getting jobs. People would rather hire someone they know over a complete stranger with a resume. When you put yourself in a position to network with other people, your chances at becoming successful increase because you now have the connections to receive the things you want.

So what exactly is the definition of networking? Networking is a process where people exchange information and ideas amongst each other or with groups that share a mutual interest. It may be for social or business purposes. Professionals connect their business network through a series of symbolic ties and contacts.

How do I network?

I’ve seen a lot of people that really don’t know how to network. Networking is all about communication and letting the world know who you are. If you are good at talking to people, networking will come to you naturally. It is as simple as introducing yourself and talking about the things that you are passionate about. Asking the other person about their passions and what they do for a living is normally what happens next. After a legit conversation, phone numbers or social media contacts are usually exchanged to keep in touch.

Social media is a good way to network. Social media provides an easy way to stay in contact with each other easily by utilizing all of the technology we use today. A lot of connections can be made by simply messaging someone and introducing yourself. I personally think that networking in person is far more beneficial than social media. When you meet someone in person, it gives both people a chance to really get to know one another and feel each other out.

How do I build my network power?

Network power all depends on the strength of your relationships and how much attention you gain when you are conversing with other people. If you are well-known for something or people view you as an expert, you will be a more attractive person to connect with. Find something that you are extremely passionate about, become an expert, and watch how your network grows. People that you meet will start referring people to you, and your network will continue to grow. If you also know other experts and powerful people, that will give people a reason to build a connection with you, especially if you can access them whenever you need them. People that you have known for a long time (childhood and close friends, college friends, etc) are the ones you can utilize to start your networking journey. These are the people that have gained your trust, respect, and will be willing to help you expand your network

Where are the best places to go for networking?

There are several places you can go to expand your network. Here are some of the best places to go when you want to network.

Conferences – Conferences are great because you are in a place with like-minded people. It is a way to expand your knowledge, learn new things, and connect with people at the same time. When you have a mutual interest with someone, it makes networking so much easier. One conference I always try to go to every year is the NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) national conference. The NSBE national conference is the real reason behind me landing my first corporate job in Orlando. I was able to network with other engineers, managers, and recruiters at the career fair and other engaging events. Volunteering Events – Volunteering is a great way to network with different people and build your resume at the same time. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer. A church or school will always have volunteering events that you can be a part of.Happy Hour – A nice happy hour is the perfect place to network with others. It is usually very social and enjoyable at the same time. You really get a chance to see people outside of their professional life. There is one thing you should take into consideration. You do not want to be the person that is on the floor passed out because you had one too many drinks. The key is building your network and becoming known for the right reasons.

Meetup App

Meetup is a service used to organize online groups that host in-person events for people with similar interests. This is a perfect app to utilize if you want to network with other people. If you go to the app, you can find different events based on location. I have been to networking events, brunches, and lunch and learns by simply utilizing the app.

GroupME

GroupME is another app that people use to network and keep in contact. Once you meet people, you have the option to create a group and add people that you connect with so you can stay in touch. One of my favorite groups is the “It is Not What You Know -Jobs Only” group. There are several professionals in different fields that post jobs daily and have instant connections. (see image below)

If you would like to be a part of this GroupMe group, download the app and contact me

Conclusion

Networking and having multiple connections can ultimately determine your success and your future. Find time to attend conferences and other network events, and I guarantee you that someone you meet can either help you or be able to connect you with someone who can. The key is also keeping in touch with all of your connections. That is how you build trust and respect from others.
